Furniture Design Award 2012

“LOVE, THINK, DESIGN GREEN”, the Furniture Design Award 2012 will be providing a platform for unbridled creativity, invention, innovation and transformational ideas for the way we think about design and the way we live on Planet Earth.

Students Category

• Open to local and international arts & design institutions.

Designers Category

• Open to local and international participant, aged 40 years and below as at 9 March 2012.

Entry Requirements

• Participation is on individual basis only.
• Entries must be newly created and unpublished (never appeared in the market as a product, featured in any newspapers, magazines, exhibitions or been a winner of other competitions.)
• Entries that infringe, breach, prejudice or violate the property, interests or rights (including but not limited to contractual rights, user rights, copyright, design rights and all other proprietary and intellectual property rights) of any third party will be disqualified.
• Participants shall be liable for claims by such third parties resulting from the infringement. The Organizer shall not be held responsible for any infringement.

Submission Requirements

• Detailed concept of the design with images or visualized sketches, including the description and reasoning behind the design, not more than two pages, must be submitted online. Do not include any name or form(s) of identification in the submission.
• The description of a maximum of 300 words should include concept, innovations, design aspects, primary function, materials used and any additional features of the product(s) to be completed using the online form.
• Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of three entries.

Format Requirements

• Format: Adobe PDF (.pdf) only, not more than two pages long.
• File Size: max. 4Mb per file, total of one file may be uploaded for each entry
• Resolution: 300 dpi
• Print Size: A4-size (210mm x 297mm)

Judging Criteria

• Degree of Innovation
  • Is the design concept new?
  • How did the new design come about and what is the design process?
  • Is there innovative use of technology (including materials, construction and business models)?
• Marketability
  • What is the potential of the product for commercialization?
  • Does it appeal to the market which it was designed for?
• Functionality
  • Does the concept fulfill all requirements of handling, usability, safety and product feasibility?
  • Does it fulfill a need or function?
  • Is it practical in terms of its size, weight and storage?
• Environmental
  • What is the choice of material and the source of it?
  • Is there efficient use of material resulting in low wastage?
  • Is the process of manufacturing and production methods environmentally friendly?
  • Is the furniture ready-to-assemble, knock-down or flat pack?

Preliminary Judging
Fifteen entries will be shortlisted in the Preliminary Judging by a judging panel that comprises distinguished personalities from various creative (furniture, interior design, architectural and fashion) industries.

Judging Interview
Short-listed semi-finalists are required to produce scaled models of their designs and present it together with concepts and prototyping processes to the judging panel during the interviews.

Final Judging
Finalists have to produce prototypes of their designs that will be showcased at the Singapore Expo during the International Furniture Fair Singapore 2012 / 29th ASEAN Furniture Show, Deco Asia and Hospitality Asia 2012. A subsidy of SGD500 will be awarded by SFIC for the production of each prototype unless the finalist is already sponsored. Finalists will present their design concepts and answer questions posed to them by the panel of judges.

The number of awards may be adjusted in accordance with the overall quality level of the design entries received,

Other Information

• SFIC reserves the right to publicize any submitted entry without prior notice.
• Finalists’ prototypes will be displayed at the discretion of SFIC.
• Notification will be given to finalists for collection of prototypes. SFIC reserves the right to dispose the prototypes, if they are not collected within 2 weeks of notification.
• SFIC assumes no responsibility for any loss or damage to the prototypes.
• Participants are required to make personal arrangements for their travels and deliver their prototypes to the judging venue.
• SFIC reserves the right to make any changes to the Award without prior notice.
• The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entertained.

Participation Fee / Mode of Payment
A non-refundable participation fee of, SGD10.00, for students from local arts & design institutions and USD15.00, for students from international arts & design institutions, is applicable respectively. A non-refundable participation fee of, SGD30.00, for local and locally-based designers and USD40.00, for international designers, is applicable respectively.
The participation fee is applicable to individual participant. The non-refundable fee is inclusive of 7% GST and payment must be made online by credit card (VISA / Mastercard only).

Submission Deadline
All entries and payment submission must reach SFIC Office by 5pm (Singapore Time) on
01 September 2011.
